I serve as Associate Professor of Practice and the Founding Director of the Executive Mind Leadership Institute at the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. I have more than a decade’s experience helping leaders to relentlessly develop themselves while retaining their humanity in the face of monumental change and challenge.
My work redefines and enhances productivity by cultivating quality of mind. I created and teach The Executive Mind, a series of demanding and transformative executive education courses dedicated to Drucker’s assertion that “You cannot manage other people unless you manage yourself first.”
My work is informed by the experience of living day-to-day for 17 years with a potentially terminal illness, and when faced with the need for life-saving surgery having more than a dozen former students come forward as organ donors.
Other activities include:
- serving from 1999-2004 as Research Director of the Quality of Life Research Center which I co-founded with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Jeanne Nakamura at the Drucker School of Management;
- active involvement in the civic leadership programs of the Southern California Leadership Network as a Senior Curriculum Fellow, teaching The Internal Dynamics of Leadership to give leaders the inner skills needed to deal with life's challenges;
- serving as faculty member for the California Health and Longevity Institute’s interdisciplinary corporate health and performance programs;
- serving as part of the executive coaching team with Corporate Coaching International, co-founded by Lois Frankel author of the bestselling books Nice Girls Don't Get Rich and Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office;.
I received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, under the direction of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience.
I also graduated from the Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government with an M.P.P., and a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Wittenberg University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. My work is also deeply informed by more than twenty years' experience with Asian contemplative practices.
I consult internationally, obsess about modern architecture, and love to eat. My wife and I dutifully serve two house cats who live in Los Angeles.
