Why Moments Matter: Opening Convocation at Wittenberg University.
What would you say to your 18-year old about how to live life? Here's my answer.
Mindfulness – Where Business and the Behavioral Sciences Intersect
Innovation and creativity are understood as necessary skills for thriving in a dynamic economy, but what is often left out is the role of transforming the mind itself. Today's overwhelming challenges require leaders to move beyond “being effective“ to fundamentally change themselves and how they see and relate to the world. How can individuals and organizations let go of ego and transform mindsets to evoke creativity, productivity and innovation? In this edition of KPCC’s Drucker Business Forum series Dr. Nick Udall and I discuss a new model for creative and productive leaders, a model in which innovation is actually a complete mentality, not a business-led process.
More about Nick Udall, PhD: co-founder and CEO of nowhere, where he works with CEOs and executive leaders of global businesses to develop breakthrough strategies and build cultures of innovation; Chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on New Models of Leadership. His new book, Riding the Creative Rollercoaster: How Leaders Evoke Creativity, Productivity and Innovation, is out this month. @drnickudall
Coffee Break with Game Changers: Health and Balance at Work: Nurturing Innovation
Some call it work-life balance, others say work-life integration. Word-smithing aside, we’re expected to be calm, centered, productive, innovative and happy in our 24/7 globalized work environment. And despite constant distractions, ambiguous power hierarchies, and need-it-yesterday deadlines – we also need time and energy for family, home, friends, relaxation. And sleep. How’s that working out for you? Not so much? Take heart. We hear you.
Re-Envisioning Sustainable Business: From Cost to Competitive Advantage to Flourishing
How can business be a force for positive human transformation? How can we expand the meaning of development to include cultivating generative human capacities?
For Drucker Day 2012, Chris Laszlo (Associate Professor at the Case Weatherhead School of Management and Visiting Professor at the Drucker School) and I addressed these and other questions. We fused his insights and practices on sustainable business with my work on cultivating flourishing human beings.
We both envision a potential future where innovative ways of doing business can positively impact both the environment as well as personal and economic well-being. I explore the question of expanding the notion of development to include the non-material as well as the material.
Chris' segment comes first and lasts for about a half hour, mine follows that and ends with Q&A. Please note I was under the weather that day and operating at reduced speed.

Focus is Power: Effectively Treating Executive Attention Deficit Disorder
by Jeremy Hunter, PhD and Marc Sokol, PhD
How to gain more effective, efficient and elegant results at work? The world is not spinning faster, it just seems that way. Businesses operate 24/7 and expect constant performance. Workers multitask through multiple projects, teams, and time zones trying to keep up with too many “top priorities”. Many silently wish to, “stop the madness”, and wonder why results don’t change. An answer lies in our ability and choice to focus attention, which may be the most critical management skill of the 21st century. Drawn from real-life examples, this paper offer several concrete tactics for enhancing your quality of attention.
